GMAC auto insurance is now sold as National General Insurance and the company was rebranded on July 1, 2013. GMAC is one of the largest auto insurance companies in the United States and the brand name was not changed due to an acquisition but a desire for the company to establish a new identity after 70 years of experience. Policyholders were not affected by the name change in any way. The company was founded in 1939 with the name Motors Insurance Corporation. It is the only auto insurance company that was founded from within the automobile manufacturing industry.
